Announcing the 2020 Luminus Board Nominees

Ahead of our AGM on April 2nd, we’ve decided to give our members a chance to review the nominees for the positions on the board. We will decide which candidates will be appointed to the board at the AGM. Please see our news update for more information about the AGM or keep reading to learn about the exciting nominees we’ve narrowed it down to. This year we have three positions available and five nominees.

Tonya Kent

Tonya Kent


Tonya is a criminal defence lawyer seeking to become a board member for the Credit Union. She graduated from York University with a specialized honours degree in Sociology and has a Juris Doctor from the University of Saskatchewan.

Currently practicing as a criminal lawyer in Toronto, she is a member of another Board for a women's health clinic where she has gained relevant experience reviewing balance sheets and other financial documents. Also, she has been part of the process to ensure that the clinic passes all relevant evaluations to continue operating.

Tonya serves on two different committees for the Criminal Lawyers' Association (CLA). Throughout her university career and in her professional career, she has always involved herself with community-driven projects.

For the past three years, she has served as a member of different boards. Passionate about everything she does, if voted in as a Board Member, she would bring the skills learned while serving on numerous committees along with the skills she has gained over the past four years as a lawyer to the board.

Ashana Khanna

Ashana Khanna

Ashana grew up in London, Ontario where she obtained her degree in Economics at Western University, she then moved to Toronto to study Human Resources Management at Ryerson University and Sales Management at Queen’s University. She worked her way up through 20 progressive positions from teller to Director of Operations leading staff numbering within the hundreds in the GTA.

Her 27 years’ experience spans board positions, retail and strategic roles in both bank and credit union environments. Understanding the day-to-day demands and barriers faced by staff, as well as the importance of strategic planning, was critical to ensuring success in the increasingly competitive and complex regulatory environment.

She held key strategic roles at Alterna Savings, where she helped to shape the company’s focus to increase its profitability and growth significantly. She currently works as a Director of Operations at Catalytic Real Estate Ltd and as a professional coach, which leverages her experience to help others achieve success while staying current within the financial services industry.

Ashana has completed all the 29 “Board 360” courses and received her CUDA level “A” Certification from the Credit Union Institute of Canada. She has been an active and dedicated member of the Luminus board for the past three years and sits on both the Audit and Compensation Committees. She is passionate about the credit union system and seeks re-election to continue to serve the staff and members.

Terri Boidman

Terri Boidman

For the past 10 years, Terri has worked as Director of Marketing and Communications at Jewish Federations of Canada, an international charitable organization that is dedicated to strengthening the Jewish community in Canada, Israel and overseas. As the central office for the federated Jewish community, JFC-UIA works in partnership with 10 Jewish Federations and dozens of regional communities across Canada to strengthen Jewish life and raise funds for community programs and initiatives in Canada, Israel and overseas.

She is responsible for the planning, creation and publication of all internal and external marketing and communication material. As a member of the senior leadership team, she supports and collaborates with the CEO and colleagues in strategic planning and decision making to ensure the continuous advancement of the organization.

As past-President and past-Secretary of the Board of Directors of 2603 Bathurst Co- Ownership Inc., she knows firsthand the trials, tribulations and satisfactions of serving on a Board of Directors. While it was time and labour intensive, she took great pride in the work that they did in the best interest of the co-ownership.

Terri is interested in joining the board at Luminus because, as a mortgagor and member of Luminus Financial, she has a vested interest in its continued success. She believes that the strength of any community is measured by the health and vitality of its members. She feels it would be a privilege to contribute to the future success of Luminus Financial as a Board Member.

Jonathan Bowness

Jonathan Bowness


Jonathan is seeking re-election to the Board of Directors of Luminus Financial. He hopes to continue to participate in the leadership of the organization and to help members achieve their financial goals while seeing Luminus grow stably into the future.

He has served on the board for four years and currently serves as Corporate Secretary on the Executive Committee; and also serves on the Audit, HR & Compensation, and Mergers & Acquisition Committees. Ongoing education is a personal priority for Jonathon and essential to his success in this role. He met his assigned annual training curriculum every year; and also attended the most recent National Conference for Canadian Credit Unions, and participated in the Leadership Under-40 symposium put on by the CCUA.

He has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Global Business Management from Ryerson University. The focus of his studies was finance, accounting, marketing, operations, economics, strategic planning, and entrepreneurship - the foundations for executing any successful business.

Professionally, he is a Solution Consultant with Ricoh Canada, where he handles the portfolios of advanced business solutions called 'Enterprise Workflow' in the GTA.

Jonathan's work puts him at the forefront of digitally transformative technology projects of all types at Medium to Enterprise organizations. Whether his client is a non-profit, a union or corporate, and no matter what their organizational goals are, he finds the right mix of software and consulting/professional services to deliver exceptional business results and drive efficiency throughout the organization. He thrives on the complexity of having a new problem on his plate each day. He relishes the satisfaction that comes with finding the perfect solution unique to each business workflow problem he is tasked with solving.

Dan Ruch

Dan Ruch

DAN RUCH, MBA, ICD.D is a Partner at Ruch & Associates Inc., providing advisory and consulting services to financial institutions. With over 25 years of both consulting and senior corporate experience, Mr. Ruch brings in-depth industry knowledge, proven expertise, and a practical approach to corporate governance, risk management, and compliance matters.

Dan has extensive experience working with boards of directors, regulators, and senior executives both as an executive in corporations and as a management consultant. Mr. Ruch has significant experience working within federally regulated financial institutions in senior executive roles. Mr. Ruch is the former Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer at Equitable Bank.

Prior to that, Mr. Ruch was Chief Compliance Officer of ResMor Trust Company. In these roles, Dan was responsible for all aspects of compliance, including conduct, privacy and data protection, anti-money laundering, regulatory compliance management, consumer disclosures, complaint management, and whistleblower programs. Dan previously served as Vice President, Privacy at CIBC where he designed, built, and implemented the bank’s Global Privacy Office. Prior to these roles, Dan has held senior roles in companies including Patheon Inc. and as a management consultant with A.T.Kearney.

Mr. Ruch completed the Directors Education Program at Rotman School of Business and holds the corporate directors’ designation ICD.D. In addition, Mr. Ruch holds a Masters in Business Administration from McMaster University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from York University. Mr. Ruch currently sits on the board of Epilepsy Toronto, a not-for-profit organization, for people living with epilepsy.
